South Shore Conservatory’sYouth Orchestra Performs Spring Concert in Duxbury This featured ArtWeek event includes works by Verdi, Tchaikovsky, scenes from Les Miserables DUXBURY and HINGHAM, MA Issued March 19, 2019…South Shore Conservatory Youth Orchestra’s (SSCYO) annual spring concert on Sunday, May 5 at 2 pm at the Duxbury Performing Arts Center, 73 Alden Street, Duxbury, has been selected as one of 100 low cost or free events during ArtWeek. The concert includes works by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, as well as scenes from Les Misérables, with the Repertory and Symphony orchestras combining to perform an arrangement of Verdi’s Overture to Nabucco. Under the guidance of Music Director Elijah Langille, SSCYO is South Shore Conservatory’s orchestra program, run in collaboration with the Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra (the Phil) and Artistic Advisor Steven Karidoyanes. SSCYO offers two leveled orchestras, and is open to students from communities throughout the South Shore and Cape Cod. Both SSCYO ensembles offer dedicated and talented young musicians the opportunity to perform symphonic music at a high level in an organized, supportive orchestra program. Both orchestras will perform in this concert – Repertory, an intermediate full orchestra, conducted by Maria Varanko; as well as Symphony, an advanced orchestra, conducted by Langille. Admission to the concert is free for students K-12. Adult tickets are $10, and may be purchased at the door. Additional support for this program is provided in part by grants from the Marshfield Cultural Council and the Scituate Cultural Council. Recognized as a national model for arts education by the National Guild for Community Arts Education, SSC is the largest, not-for-profit, community school for the arts in Massachusetts, serving over 4500 students of all ages and abilities at two beautiful campuses and in partnership with schools, and social service and community agencies throughout the South Shore. A third campus in Hanover is scheduled to open to the public for classes and programs in the summer of 2020. Students participate in more than 50 diverse programs in music, dance and drama, with performance playing an important role in overall education. With more than 100 exceptional musicians on faculty, SSC offers over 200 professionally produced concerts annually. Through innovative partnerships, SSC’s Creative Arts Therapies department supports the mental, emotional, and physical health of some of our community’s underserved members, and the ImagineARTS program strengthens pre-reading skills for young learners in Brockton Schools through integrated music and dramatic play.
